What a great way to end the season! The sun was shining and the Reds turned up today in jovial mood knowing that a win would see them finish the season in fifth place in the league.
Comets battled bravely throughout and can consider themselves unfortunate to come up against a Hemel side who were out to make the most of their last outing of the current season which has seen the Reds make tremendous improvements. The side are now unrecognisable from the side who fell to an opening day 7-0 defeat.
Only Tyler was absent from the squad today who started with Jamie and Josh E as substitutes given that they are the only 2 who had yet to start on the sidelines all season.
By the time they joined the game Hemel were already 2-0 up thanks to George's opener and a headed goal from Tom. Jamie, playing as a striker rather than in his usual defensive role, scored the third with a looping lob over the approaching 'keeper and Josh P made it 4-0 before half-time.
The Reds sensed that more goals were on the cards and began the second half in a confident mood. With all players getting an equal share of the action the boys took the most of their opportunities. Second half goals from Will (2), Tim and second goals of the game from Tom and Josh P made it 9-0 with 10 minutes remaining.
At this point the only player to have played every minute of every game this season for the Reds, Chris, was given the opportunity to venture further up field and swapped his Goalkeeping shirt for that of Rory's in an attempt to get on the score sheet.
The boys showed just how much they have bonded as a squad as everyone was willing Chris on as he hustled and bustled in search of his goal. Clearly goalkeepers aren't the best for beating the offside trap but as the minutes ticked on Chris came closer and closer. On two occasions forcing the Comets 'keeper into making excellent saves. As the final whistle approached Chris found himself with the ball at his feet in the area amidst a crowd of players. He managed to keep his head and stabbed the ball in to round the season off in perfect style.
There was barely time to kick off before the final whistle and the boys, quite rightly, celebrated not only this victory but their achievements throughout the whole season. More time will be found to dwell on how far they have progressed and some of the memorable victories from the past eight months but for now the players could be proud of their final day victory.
Player of the match had to go to the whole side for a thoroughly stylish performance and some well taken goals.
Well done lads. League Champions next season???!!
